Who We Are:
Garrett County, Maryland, is the most western county in Maryland, with beautiful terrain ranging from farmland, forests, small towns, the famous Deep Creek Lake, and the mighty Backbone Mountain ridgeline. We are home to Garrett College, Garrett County Memorial Hospital, 14 public schools, 600+ farms, but most importantly, 30,000 citizens (and 1.4 millions 4-season vacationers) who are proud to live, work and play in a special place!
Our Mission:
We think we have what Google is seeking. Please take a minute to tour our site to learn why the Garrett Google Fiber Network is the right place to test the Google fiber initiative. Garrett County is proposing the Garrett Google Fiber Network to prove the validity of the Google fiber initiative trial in a rural, yet progressive, diverse and cooperative county.
According to Google:
On 2/10/2010, Google announced a Request for Information for communities across the USA to build a Google fiber network. Google wants to develop, implement and operate the Google fiber network in several communities to test next generation applications, identify new deployment techniques, and prove the validity of operating a 1 Gbps “open network" that gives users the choice of multiple service providers in a transparent environment.
They plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people. Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections.
